We Are Traffic/Pedalphiles
.... The young people documented in Brian Standing’s Pedalphiles (35 min.), on the other hand, are so radical that they’re inherently fascinating. Calling themselves S.C.A.B. (for “Skids Creating Apocalyptic Bicycles”) they prowl Madison, Wisconsin, collecting discarded bikes and hammering or welding their parts together to create highly unconventional designs that are head turning but also ridable—though the rider may sit very close to the ground or high in the air. Through these unusual machines they hope to call attention to bicycling; one of them advocates banning automobiles from cities. But they also offer a critique of consumer culture by creating bikes at no cost and refusing to sell them (though they’ll help you make your own), and their group rides are perhaps a form of performance art.
